On a crisp February day in 2024 near the Hudson River in Highland, New York, yellow, white and chartreuse mason line was circled around five pairs of slender ash trees in the wetland behind a stone house built in 1811. The landscape, surrounded by stone walls, was originally used as a pasture for sheep and cattle.
As thousands of footsteps created oval paths around the trees during the making of Between, the mud got deeper and deeper as the day warmed. The sun came out. The breeze picked up. Light began to enliven the taut bands of vibrating color. Blue violet shadows on the fresh snow added a complementary color condition. Very few people witnessed this project in person.
After 15 days, the string was cut down and Between was gone.
