ellipse
NYU Langone Hospitals
Citicorp Building, New York, NY
installation completed 2023

Commissioned by NYU Langone Hospitals, ellipse is a custom wall drawing in glass located on six floors in patient waiting areas and corridor spaces that face a large open atrium of the Citicorp Building at 53rd and Lexington in New York, NY. Working with former NYU Langone Curator Katherine Meehan, a focus on symbolism was brought to the new women’s health center in this newly renovated facility. A large oval that spans all six floors is incorporated into the rhythmic patterns in the glass and appears to pass from floor to floor within each of the 9 by 60-foot mirrored glass wall drawings.

The oval, derived from the Latin word ovum, has come to represent rebirth, fertility and is a sign of immortality, uniqueness and zest for life. It seems a fitting concept to represent the woman, the female and those who identify with female in all its many meanings.
